Origin of name
Shiva → Shivpuri : Shivpuri is very ancient town and a sacred place. It is named after the God Shiva. The place was abode of Shiva hence called Shivapuri. It was locally known earlier by the name ‘Sipri’. Shiva is considered the progenitor of Jats. All the characters associated with Shva such as Kartikeya, Ganesha, Virabhadra find mention in the ancestry of Jats. Shiva is thus rightly considered to be the progenitor of Jats. His descendants were known as Shivavanshi. The presence of Sheoran/Sheokand gotras at present in Jats is yet another evidence of this fact. They consider themselves to be the descendants of Shiva. Geography
Shivpuri district is located in the northwest part of Madhya Pradesh state. Its geographical area is about 10278 km2. Out of the total area, 45% land is forest cover. Faunal and floral biodiversity is very high. The Madhav National Park (MNP) and Karera Bird Sanctuary are located in this district.[24]
The district is bounded on the south by Ashoknagar and Guna districts, on the north by Morena, Gwalior and Datia districts, on the east by Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh and on the west by Kota district of Rajasthan.[25]
The district sits on the Malwa Plateau of the Deccan Traps with many small hill tops originally covered with deciduous forests.[26]
The large bodies of water in the district are the Madikheda Reservoir and the Mohini Pickup Reservoir near Narwar. The principle river is the Sind River which arises in southern Badarwas Tehsil, flows north-northeastwards through the central and northeastern parts of the district and enters the Yamuna at Kanjausa. The district drainage is all within the large Yamuna basin, but falls into four sub-basins drained respectively by tributaries of
(1) the Parwati River (Parvati) which flows west to east and forms part of the northern boundary of the district being dammed for the Kaketo Reservoir and Harsi Reservoir[27] and flowing into the Sind just upstream of the mouth of the Mahuar;
(2) the Kuno River which flows from southeast to northwest into the Chambal and forms part of the western boundary of the district;
(3) the Betwa River which flows from southwest to northeast and forms part of the eastern boundary of the district; and
(4) the Mahuar River itself (with its main tributary the Paroch Nadi) which arises in Pichhor Tehsil, flows from south to north, enters Karera Tehsil at the village of Bardi, crosses Narwar Tehsil and enters the Sind just northeast (downstream) of Senhra Khurd.[28]

Mining in Shivpuri
This information is based on paper published on 29.9.2014 by Vishwambhar Prasad Sati of Department of Geography and Resource Management, School of Earth Sciences, Mizoram University (Central), Aizawl-796004, India.
The paper examines the socio-economic and environmental impacts of stone mining in Shivpuri district. A large number of people are dependent on stone mining activities for carrying their livelihoods as stone mining is one of the most economic activities after agricultural practices in Shivpuri district. A high quality stone belt is spread around 100 km area from west to east. Meanwhile, about 60% stone mines are located in the Madhav National Park and other forest areas of the district. Due to large-scale extraction of stones from the forest area, depletion of biodiversity resources was enormous. And as a result, the mining practices were banned and this led to worst socio-economic conditions of the poor rural people. This study also attempts to penetrate the exclusive solutions that support both mining activities for carrying livelihoods and environmental restoration through large-scale plantation campaign. It reveals that if appropriate measures are taken place, mining practices and environmental restoration can go parallel. This study was conducted through collection of data from the primary sources. A case study of the five villages through household level survey was conducted during the years 2009-2011.
Shivpuri district is located in the northwest part of Madhya Pradesh state. Its geographical area is about 10278 km2. Out of the total area, 45% land is forest cover. Faunal and floral biodiversity is very high. The Madhav National Park (MNP) and Karera Bird Sanctuary are located in this district.
Further, Kuno-Palpur wild life sanctuary is located in its neighbouring district, Shyopur. All these three parks obtain national importance. The economy of the District lies on the output from agricultural practices and from forest products. Agricultural land is limited to only 11% of the total geographical area; and it is rain-fed. Production and per ha yield of crops depend on the timely arrival of monsoon and fertility of soil.
Crops are grown mostly during the monsoon season and in winters as kharif and rabi crops respectively. Wheat, barley, soyabeen and groundnuts are the major crops. Some fruits: guava, papaya and mango are grown but they are consumed domestically. Dependency on forest resources is high for fuel-wood, fodder and food. About 40% of the total population is tribal, which constitutes mainly Sahria and Bedia tribes.
The people of Saharia tribe are forest dwellers and they are fully dependent on forest products for running their livelihoods. Due to establishment of Madhav National Park, the whole forest area is protected and these tribal people meet their demand from the forest illegally. This has led to the people-park conflict.
Stone mining is the largest activity and a major source of livelihood. The economically sound people owned the mines and tribal people work in these mines as labour. There is a 100 km long stone belt spread from Pohari in the west to Pichhor in the east. Quality of stone varies from place to place but, there are some stone mines where the best quality stones are extracted and exported to Arab countries. The main problem associated with extracting stones from the mines in a large quantity is their location as many mines are located in or surroundings of MNP and forest areas. There has already been high level forest degradation due to mining activities. The climate of the region is semi-arid. During the winter season, temperature recedes below 10°C and during the summer season, temperature accedes above 40°C. During the recent past, temperature has been increased upto 45°C. Rainfall is very scarce (average 100 cm annually). Monsoon rain normally occurs only in the two months: from mid-July to mid-September. During December-January, rainfall occurs due to the western disturbances, which is nomenclature as ‘Maotha’. But, it is insufficient. About 40% land is stony and barren.
History of Stone Mining in Shivpuri: Stone mining in Shivpuri district has a long history. It has been practicing in a small-scale from the British period in India and was the main source of income of the poor rural people. Along with expansion of mining technology, presence of high quality precious stone reservoir and availability of market, mining activities gained tremendous momentum and that was resulted in the economic development of the region as mining activities augmented employment and generated income. The local people involvement, particularly of tribal community, in the stone mining is as an owner of the small mines, employees and workers. The mining activity provides a suitable base for their livelihoods. In the beginning of the 1990s, mining practices had been accelerated, and output from it was very high. As more than 60% population composition is of Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Scheduled Caste (SC) people and among them, many households are landless, thus, they had the opportunity to work in these mines as unskilled labour. Primarily, the mines were given to ST and SC people in lease but, they were unable to run these mines due to lack of money as there are lots of infrastructural facilities required for mining and these people were economically very poor. Therefore, the economically rich people from other castes took over these mines from them. Even under such circumstances, the ST and SC people were happy and they were quite able to run their livelihoods while working as labours in these mines. As population grew, pressure on mining activities has increased. This situation led to illegal mining in the forest and park areas and as a result, large-scale forest depletion and loss of biodiversity took place. By the end of 1990s, a group of conservationist moved to the Supreme Court of India to ban mining activities. Public interest litigation was filed that explained about large-scale environmental degradation due to mining in Shivpuri District. The Supreme Court has verdict in favour of the petitioners and imposed ban on mining activities in and surroundings of forest and park areas. Some stone mines, which are located in the revenue land, were also closed due to dispute between revenue and forests departments on the ownership. This all together created a situation of acute atrocity and anarchy as the local people were utterly discontent. The tribal community with the support of local people agitated against this decision for a long time but they remained unsuccessful. The people suffered with unrest in the society, poverty, malnutrition and starvation and this is continued. There are total 23 mining areas Table 1. Out of these, mining is practiced only in 6 areas, which come under the revenue department. Those mines, which are located in MNP and forest areas, are completely closed.

Ancient History
Dhala crater: Shivpuri also has Asia's largest crater (the Dhala crater) which is almost 11 km in diameter. The Dhala impact structure (N25°17'59.7" and E78°8'3.1") is an impact structure formed by an asteroid impact.[29] It is situated near Bhonti village in Pichhore block of Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh state in India. It is the largest impact structure in India, and between the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia. The diameter of the structure is estimated at 3 kilometres,[30] while other sources estimate its diameter to be 11 km diameter. It is the second such structure found in India, after Lonar Lake.[31]

Churanchhaj (चूरनछाज) is ancient site of wall paintings in Madhav National Park in Shivpuri. The Churan Chhaj Dhammalipi Inscription, Madhav National Park, has got 10000 years ancient rock paintings on the walls and inner roofs of a hillock. The area is surrounded by thick forests.

Rule of Yaudheyas: Ranod is known for a Mattamayura Matha. Rannod (रनोद) is a historical Village in Badarwas Tehsil in Shivpuri District of Madhya Pradesh, India. Ranod is site of Khokhaimath of Rannod located inside a dense forest. It is an ancient spiritual centre, dedicated to Lord Shiva. [32] According to Stone Inscription at Ranod, The credit for establishing this monastery goes to Sage Purandara, a religious preceptor of King Avantivarman, who belonged to the Mattamayura lineage. The monastery is locally known as Khokhari Math. Ranod village was known as Aranipadra or Ranipadra in the inscriptions. The inscription is undated but can be assigned between circa 9th-11th century CE, on the paleographical ground. [33]
|
Rannod was once a center of Shaivism and possessed number of temples and a monastery of medieval period. The monastery locally called as Khokhari Math, now used as a temple, was originally a monastery of Shiva athletics as is recorded in the large Sanskrit inscription found from this monastery. According to this inscription, this monastery was built by Purandara, a religious preceptor of King Avantivarman and was extended by Vyomashiva. It is also recorded in this inscription that Vyomashiva also built the tank which is seen still in front of the monastery. The inscription is undated but can be assigned between circa 9th to 11th century CE, on the paleographical ground. The monastery here is built of massive sandstone blocks without mortar and roofed with the huge slabs of the same material. It has a Courtyard and open veranda with rooms attached to it on all four sides. this monastery like similar one at Kadwaha, Surwaya and Terahi is also a work of famous Mattamayura Shaiva ascetics who flourished in this part during 9th-11th century. |
Stone Inscription at Ranod[34] — There is one stone inscription embedded in situ within the Khokhari Math. This is the earliest inscription detailing the Mattamayura lineage.
Alexander Cunningham first noticed the inscription at Ranod, engraved on a stone tablet embedded in the left-end wall of the lower verandah. It has 64 lines composed in Sanskrit and written in the Nagari characters of the 10th century CE. It was composed by Devadatta, written by Rudra, and engraved by Jejjaka.
Monastery (Khokhaimath) at Ranod is site of a Monuments of National Importance in Madhya Pradesh. It is a double storied building, built of large blocks of stones and large stone slabs, used for roofing given to Saivite Sect, named Mattamayura. It consists of courtyard ,corridor at sides and series of rooms. (C. 10th CAD).[35]
Surwaya is a small town in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. It was an important center of the Mattamayura Shaiva sect and a monastery named Shankhamatha was established in the town during the eighth century CE. The Mattamayura sect was founded by Kadambaguhadhivasi at Kadwaya. His successor, Shankhadhipati, presided over Shankhamatha at Surwaya.[36] While Kadwaya (ancient Kadambaguha) continued to be the main center of the Mattamayura sect but many branches of it soon came up at various locations, near and far, i.e. Surwaya, Terahi, Mahua, Ranod, Chandrehe, Gurgi, etc. [37]
Mattamayura (मत्तमयूर), meaning the dancing peacock, was a Mahabharata Tribe. The peacock was the seal of Yaudhey people and this sign also used to be printed on their flags. This term has also been used in Mahabharata. So, in simple terms, Mattamayura signifies the Yaudheya tribe. Mattamayura is merely another name for the Yaudheyas. [38]
Yaudheyas are identified with the Jats clan Joiyas or Johiya[39] of Bahawalpur and Multan Divisions (Pakistan) and Bikaner, Rajasthan (India). Yaudheyas were the rulers of South-Eastern Punjab and Rajasthan. Even today these areas are inhabited by the Johiyas.
This claim is further supported by the fact that Ranod village was known as Aranipadra (अरनिपद्र) or Ranipadra in the inscriptions. Araniyal (अरनियाल) is a Muslim Jat clan found in Pakistan. The Arnyals are a Jat clan from Southern Azad Kashmir, Jhelum and the surrounding area; their name is more widely pronounced as Ranyal.
Modern History
It is steeped in the royal legacy of its past, when it was the summer capital of the Scindia rulers of Gwalior. Earlier to that, Shivpuri's dense forests were the hunting grounds of the Mughal emperors. The thick forests are still there and continue to be a source of forest-produces of domestic and industrial use.
The first historical mention of Sipri (Shivpuri) was of Emperor Akbar hunting elephants there in 1564. Emperor Akbar captured herds of elephants for his stables while returning from Mandu in year 1564.[40]
In the 16th century, Shivpuri, like all of Gwalior, was part of the Maratha Empire. The empire weakened at the end of the century, and during the Gardi-ka-wakt, or 'period of unrest',[41] the Kachhwahas of Narwar secured the town and district. The Sindhias, under Daulat Scindia, captured the town and district from the ruler of Narwar in 1804, and made the town their summer capital.[42]
Shivpuri was awarded as Jagir to the Kachhawahs of Narwar in the 17th century. It came under the rule of the Scindias in 1804, who granted it to one of their Maratha generals by name Ingle. Later, it was transferred to the HEIC in 1817 under a treaty, but the Scindias regained it in 1818.
Tantya Tope was awarded death sentence on April 17, 1859 by British Raj for his part in the Revolt of 1857 in nearby Jhansi. He was hanged to death in Shivpuri, at a site near the present collectorate.
Important towns in the district are: Badarwas, Karera, Khaniyadhana, Kolaras, Narwar and Pichhore.
Shivpuri District has Narwar town of historical importance just east of the Kali Sind River, situated at a distance of 41 km from Shivpuri. It is famous for medieval fortress of Narwar. Narwar is believed to be named after Nala.
Shivpuri is known for temples. There is one famous temple of Ballari Mata near the Shivpuri town in Madhav National Park. It was established about one thousand years back. It is believed to be connected with Karauli. Ballari Mata temple is located in the extension area of the Park. In 1999 Ballarpur village was relocated (under the ministry of environment and forests, Beneficiary Oriented Scheme for Tribal Development), and 90 families (around 70 per cent adivasi), the majority of whom were historically almost completely dependent upon the park for survival, were moved to 2 km outside its boundary.

(Cluster Rock Art Sites of the Chambal Valley)

Jat History
Jat History in Shivpuri
Origin of name Shivpuri from Shiva: Shivpuri is very ancient town and a sacred place. [88] (See : Origin of Jats from Shiva's Locks)
Deva Samhitā (देवसंहिता) is a collection of Sanskrit hymns by Gorakh Sinha during the early medieval period. Deva Samhitā propounded the theory of Origin of Jats from Shiva's Locks. [89] [90] [91] Devasamhita records an account of the Origin of the Jats in the form of discussion between Shiva and Parvati expressed in shloka (verses). Pārvatī asks Shiva, O Lord Bhutesha, knower of all religions, kindly narrate about the birth and exploits of the Jat race. Who is their father? Who is their mother? Which race are they? When were they born? Having read the mind of Parvati, Shiva said, "O mother of the world, I may tell you honestly the origin and exploits of the Jats about whom none else has so far revealed anything to you. Some relevant verses are given below.
There is mention of Jats in Deva Samhitā [92] in the form of powerful rulers over vast plains of Central Asia[93]. When Pārvatī asks Shiva about the origin of Jats, their antiquity and characters of Jats, Shiva tells her like this in Sanskrit shloka-15 as under:
Mahābalā mahāvīryā, Mahāsatya parākramāḥ
Sarvāgre kshatriyā jattā Devakalpā dridh-vratāḥ || 15 ||
- Meaning - "They are symbol of sacrifice, bravery and industry. They are, like gods, firm of determination and of all the kshatriyā, the Jats are the prime rulers of the earth." [94]
Shiva explains Parvati about the origin of Jats in shloka–16 of Deva samhita as under:
Shrishterādau mahāmāye Virabhadrasya shaktitaḥ
Kanyānām Dakshasya garbhe jātā jattā maheshwarī. || 16 ||
- Meaning – "In the beginning of the universe with the personification of the illusionary powers of Virabhadra and Daksha's daughter gani's womb originated the caste of Jats."
Pārvatī asks, in the shloka-17 of 'Deva Samhitā' about the origin and exploits of the Jats, whom none else has so far revealed, Shiva tells Parvati that:
Garva kharchotra vigrānam devānām cha maheshwarī
Vichitram vismayam satvam Pauran kai sāngīpitam || 17 ||
- Meaning - "The history of origin of Jats is extremely wonderful and their antiquity glorious. The Pundits of history did not record their annals, lest it should injure and impair their false pride of the vipras and gods. We describe that realistic history before you."
