The Founders

History

Barnava is a historically significant village in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, India, closely associated with the Mahabharata as the site of the Lakshagriha (House of Lac). It is located near Binauli and is renowned for the ancient mound where the Pandavas are believed to have escaped a burning house, with tunnels discovered in the area.

Mahabharata Significance: Traditionally believed to be the ancient Varanāvata, Barnava is a major pilgrimage site associated with the Kauravas' plot against the Pandavas.

Recent Legal Ruling: In February 2024, after a 53-year legal battle, the site of the Lakshagriha was determined by a court to be the "Lakshagriha land" and not a Dargah, with the land awarded to the Hindu side.

Key Attractions: Key sites include the Lakshagriha mound and the Lakshagrah Lakha Mandap, where a local Ashram maintains a temple structure on the mound. Barnava, near Binauli is the site of the Lakshagriha, the lac palace that was built by Mayasura, the demon architect, to kill the Pandavas.

The district city Bagpat, founded by the Pandava brothers of Mahabharata, was originally known as Vyaghraprastha (Sanskrit: व्याघ्रप्रस्थ, lit. “tigercity”) because of the population of tigers found many centuries ago, and was one of the five villages asked by the Pandava brothers from Duryodhan to avoid the Mahabharat. Barnava, near Baraut is the site of the Lakshagraha – palace made of wax, that was built by Purochana a minister of Duryodhana to kill the Pandavas.[1]

In Mahabharata

Varanavata (वारणावत) is mentioned in Mahabharata (V.31.19). Udyoga Parva/Mahabharata Book V Chapter 31 mentions that Pandavas were desirous of peace and demanded only five villages: Kushasthala, Vrikasthala, Asandi, Varanavata, and for the fifth any other village to end the quarrel. [2]

Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 90 mentions that Duryodhana became exceedingly jealous of Pandavas. All Duryodhana's efforts proved futile. Then Dhritarashtra sent them, by an act of deception to Varanavata, and they went there willingly. There an endeavour was made to burn them to death; but it proved abortive owing to the warning counsels of Vidura. After that the Pandavas slew Hidimva, and then they went to a town called Ekachakra. There also they slew a Rakshasa of the name of Vaka and then went to Panchala. And there obtaining Draupadi for a wife they returned to Hastinapura. And there they dwelt for some time in peace and begat children. [3]
