Location

Sagwara is located in the east-central Dungarpur district, in Sagwara Tehsil. It has an average elevation of 244 metres (801 ft). Sagwara is famous for its sculpture, marble carving, temple architecture and gold jewelry. It is a major trading hub for nearby villages.

History

Its ancient name was Sagapattana (सागपत्तन). It had a temple of Adinatha in 15th century. Subhachandra wrote his Pandavapurana in this Adinatha temple of V.S. 1608. A temple of Sambhavanatha was in existence in V.S. 1639.

Sagwara is the third largest populated place after Banswara and Dungarpur in the historical areas of Rajasthan. The majority of the population is of the Hindu religion and it also has a significant population of Jainism and Dawoodi Bohra (a Shia Islamic Muslim community).

Jain History

Sagwara is important town of Vagad area. It has a number of Jain shrines belonging to both the sects. The Chintamani Parshwnath Temple contains the inscription of Vikram 1622 (1567 AD) and Vikram 1635 (1579 AD) the Chandra Prabh Chaityalaya is another important Temple. Its consecration was celebrated in Vikram 1654 by Vijaya Sena Suri, a disciple of Hir Vijaya Suri. Khima Pamecha arranged for the festivities at a befitting large scale. The details of these activities are recorded in line 6 and 7 of the inscription. An icon of the above date is preserved in the Ajmer Museum. It was set up by Dunger Nath.

सागवाड़ा

सागवाड़ा भारत के राजस्थान राज्य के डूंगरपुर ज़िले में स्थित एक नगर है। सागवाड़ा का पिनकोड- 314025 है। सागवाड़ा की डूंगरपुर से दूरी 45 कि॰मी॰ है। भीखाभाई सागवाड़ा नहर राजस्थान के डूंगरपुर ज़िले में हैं। इस नहर परियोजना को 2002 में केन्द्रीय जल आयोग ने स्वीकृति प्रदान की थी। माही नदी पर साइफन का निर्माण कर यह नहर निकाली गई है।
