Parmendra Sirohi

Dr Parmendra Sirohi (born 14 January 1973) is an Indian physician. He is a Professor and Head of Department (HOD) in the Department of Medicine at Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner. Previously, Sirohi also served as Medical Superintendent of PBM Hospital, Bikaner. Sirohi's academic and research work has included internal medicine, malaria, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, diabetes mellitus, hepatology and metabolic disorders. He has authored or co-authored research articles in Indian and international medical journals, including studies on severe Plasmodium vivax malaria, malaria-associated thrombocytopenia, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other medical conditions.

Early life and education

Sirohi was born on 14 January 1973. He belongs to Hindu Jat Family. He completed his medical education at R.N.T. Medical College, Udaipur, obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and subsequently an MD in General Medicine in 2002.

He completed his medical internship at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital and R.N.T. Medical College, Udaipur, followed by postgraduate residency training in medicine. He subsequently worked as a senior resident at Ashok Hospital, Bharatpur, and as a senior resident in cardiology at ESI Hospital, Basaidarapur, New Delhi.

Academic career

Sirohi joined the Department of Medicine at Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner, as an Assistant Professor in December 2004. He subsequently became Associate Professor in 2010 and Professor in April 2015. He was appointed Senior Professor in April 2019. Currently, Sirohi is professor and head of department of medicine at the Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner. Previously, Sirohi also served as Medical Superintendent of PBM Hospital, Bikaner.

Research

Sirohi's research has particularly involved infectious diseases and tropical medicine. He has collaborated with researchers from Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner, and other institutions on studies of malaria and its complications.

A 2009 study published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene examined severe Plasmodium vivax malaria among 1,091 adult patients admitted to Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner between 2003 and 2005. Sirohi was among the authors.

He was also a co-author of a study published in Platelets examining thrombocytopenia in patients with Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax and mixed malaria infections in Bikaner. The study included 1,064 patients and was published in 2010.

His earlier work also included research concerning malaria-associated hepatitis. A 2006 review in Gastroenterology & Hepatology listed Sirohi among its authors and identified his affiliation as Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner.

His later research has included diabetes, HIV/AIDS, metabolic disorders and other areas of internal medicine. A 2018 study in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India examined chronic liver disease among patients with coeliac disease and the effect of a gluten-free diet.

He has also been involved in research on HIV/AIDS patients in Bikaner and studies conducted through the ART centre at the tertiary-care hospital.
