Newaj River (नेवाज़ नदी) is a left bank tributary of the river Parwan which in turn is a right bank principal tributary of the Kalisindh river.

Newaj River
Newaj River: The Newaj River is a left bank tributary of the river Parwan which in turn is a right bank principal tributary of the Kalisindh river. It rises at an elevation of 634 m in Astha tehsil of Sehore district in M.P. and traverses northerly course till it joins the river Parwan in the Jhalawar district. The total length of the river is 220 km, out of which 205 km is in M.P. The catchment area of river Newaj upto confluence with parwan is 4372 sqkm. The catchment area upto Mohanpura dam site is 3594 sqkm.[1]
History
Nirvindhya (निर्विन्ध्या) is name of a river from the Vindhyas; in the Riksha Mountains in Bharatavarsha; visited by Balarama.[2] It was mentioned by Kalidasa in Meghaduta. It has been identified with Parvati River.
Nirvindhya has been identified with Parvati River, Originating from the northern slopes of Vindhya Range in Madhya Pradesh, it branches out from Kali Sindh River further flowing in Baran district of Rajasthan state. It flows through Jhalawar district and the Kota district of the state. The river from these districts of Rajasthan finally merges at the right bank of Chambal River.
निर्विन्ध्या नदी
विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है ...निर्विन्ध्या (AS, p.501) विख्यात महाकवि कालिदास के 'मेघदूत' (पूर्वमेघ, 30) में वर्णित एक नदी का नाम है। कालिदास ने मेघदूत में इस नदी का बड़ा ही सुन्दर वर्णन किया है- 'वीचिक्षोभस्तवित्तविहगश्रेणिकांचीगुणाया:, ससर्पन्त्या: स्खलितसुभगं दर्शितादर्तनाभे: निर्विन्ध्याया: पथिभवरसाभ्यंतर: सन्निपत्य स्त्रीणागाद्यं प्रणयवचनं विभ्रमो हि प्रयेषु'।
यह नदी मेघ के यात्रा क्रम में विदिशा और उज्जयिनी के मार्ग में वर्णित है तथा इसकी स्थिति कालिदास के अनुसार सिंधु नदी और उज्जयिनी के ठीक पूर्व में बताई गई है। संभव है कि कालिदास ने [p.502]: वर्तमान पार्वती नदी को ही 'निर्विन्ध्या' कहा हो। पार्वती नदी उज्जैन से पूर्व, विंध्य श्रेणी से निस्सृत होकर चंबल नदी में मिलती है। विदिशा और सिंधु (=काली सिंध) के बीच कोई और उल्लेखनीय नदी नहीं जान पड़ती। श्रीमद्भागवत 5,9,18 की नदी सूची में भी निर्विन्ध्या का नामोल्लेख है- 'कृष्णावेश्या भीमरथी गोदावरी निर्विन्ध्या पयोष्णी तापी रेवा...'
विष्णु पुराण में निर्विन्ध्या को 'तापी' (ताप्ती नदी) और पयोष्णी के साथ ही 'ऋक्ष' (अमरकंटक) से निर्गत बताया है- 'तापीपयोष्णी निर्विन्ध्या प्रमुखा ऋक्षसंभवा:' विष्णु पुराण 2,3,31
कुछ विद्वानों ने निर्विन्ध्या नदी का चंबल की सहायक एक छोटी-सी नदी नेवाज से किया है। (दे.बी.सी. ला-हिस्टोरिकल ज्योग्रेफ़ी ऑफ़ ऐंशेट इंडिया, पृष्ठ 35) वायु पुराण 65,102 में इस नदी को निर्विन्ध्या कहा गया है।
