Mechu

Mechu (मेचू), Maichu (मैचू)^[1] is Gotra of Jats found in Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. It is a branch of Johiya. Khichar, Mechu and Kulhari Gotras / Clan Jat name have given by real brothers- Khemraj Malaji.

Due to misspellings and typos of the word Mechu in the past, the clan was sometimes written as "Nechu" instead of "Mechu." However, Nechu is not a separate clan; it is considered a separate name, but part of the Mechu clan lineage.

Origin

Malaji, according to the bard, was one of 12 sons of Raja Shiv Singh Johiya (959 AD) of Kot Malot (Malout) in Muktsar, Punjab. He is said to have given fame to Mechu (मेचू) Clan of Jats.^[2]

Jat Gotras Namesake

Mechu (Jat clan) = Malaji 10th Son of Raja Shiv Singh Johiya (959 AD) of Kot Malot, is believed to be the founder of the Mechu Gotra. Mechu Gotra peoples established the village of Posana in present-day Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. Later, the descendants of this gotra peoples also settled in the nearby region of Narhad (Narhar). After some time, they further expanded and established the village Kuloth Kalan. Today, Kuloth Kalan is considered one of the main settlements of the Mechu Gotra, where approximately 1000 families of the Mechu clan are residing. This village has become a major center of the Mechu community and reflects the continued lineage of the descendants of Malaji, the founder of the Mechu Gotra . After migrating from these large villages, the people of the Mechu gotra settled in different places and established several new villages .Today, the Mechu gotra has its presence in more than 50–60 villages.

Mechu (Jat clan) = Mechka is a village in Nagri tahsil in Dhamtari district, Chhattisgarh. Machaka-Sihava (मचका सिहवा) is mentioned in verse-16 of Rajim Stone Inscription of Prithvideva II - Kalachuri Year 896 (=1145 AD)......(V. 16) Jagapâla (जगपाल) is to his enemies as the scent-elephant is (to ordinary elephants), — (he) who again took the fort of Machakâ-Sihavâ (मचका सिहवा) and the country of Bhramaravadra (भ्रमरवद्र) and achieved prowess by his arm,(p.457).....Machakâ-Sihavâ (मचका सिहवा) is probably Mechakâ-Sihavâ south of Dhamtari, as suggested by R B Hiralal. (p.453).^[3]

Over time, the descendants of Malaji spread to different regions of North India, particularly in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Punjab, where members of the Mechu Gotra can still be found today

History

The history of the Mechu Gotra is believed to be more than one thousand years old. According to traditional genealogical accounts, in Vikram Samvat 1015 (959 A.D.), a Kshatriya ruler named Raja Shiv Singh (also known as Shyo Singh) ruled the region of Kot Malot (present-day Muktsar in Punjab). He was known as a brave, just, and benevolent king. After migrating from Punjab,Raja Shiv Singh had twelve sons, and each of them later became the founder of a separate clan or gotra. Among these sons, the tenth son, Malaji, is believed to be the founder of the Mechu Gotra. Mechu Gotra peoples established the village of Posana in present-day Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. People belonging to the Mechu Gotra consider themselves the descendants of Malaji, and their lineage is traditionally traced back to Raja Shiv Singh and the Johiya clanMechu gotra peoples the descendant of Raja Shiv Singh Johiya . It is branch of Johiya gotra the have 600 hundred village of Johiya gotra during Sher Singh Johiya govern, after this, ten different gotras were formed from this gotra, in which the biggest gotra was Khichar gotra and Khemraj was eldest son of Raja Shiv Singh (959 AD), who is said to have given name to Khichar Clan of Jats.. He was attacked by Yavanas in 959 AD and lost his kingdom. He along with 12 sons moved from Kot Malot (Malout) (Muktsar) (Punjab) to Sidhmukh in Rajasthan. Shiv Singh's sons gave name to 12 Jat Gotras as under:

1. Khemraj → Khichar, who founded Kanwarpura, Bhadra (Bhadra, Hanumangarh) 2. Barasi → Babal, who founded Barasari (Jamal Sirsa) 3.Manaji → Manjhu, Sihol, Loonka 4. Karmaji→ Karir 5. Karnaji → Kularia 6. Jagguji → Jhaggal 7. Durjanji→ Durajana 8. Bhinwaji→ Bhanwaria 9. Narayanji → Niradhana 10. Malaji → Mechu who found Posana (Jhunjhunu )

KHAP

National President Choudhary Shishram Mechu The Mechu Gotra Khap has been established at the national level to organize and represent members of the Mechu community across different regions. On 8 March 2026, during a meeting held with the unanimous consent (Sarv-sammati) of the members, Ex-Chairman Chaudhary SHISHRAM MECHU, resident of Village Kushalpura, Haryana, was elected as the National President of the Mechu Gotra Khap.

During this meeting, the Khap resolved to work for the social upliftment of the community and took a pledge to eliminate social evils such as dowry (dahej), drug addiction (nasha), and other harmful practices from society. More than two dozen villages belonging to the Mechu Gotra participated in this gathering and expressed their support for these social reform initiatives.

Traditionally, a Khap is a community organization representing a group of villages or a clan, which often discusses social matters and community welfare in rural areas of northern India.

Temple of Dada Keshav ji at Kuloth Kalan

An old famous temple of Temple of Dada Keshav ji at Kuloth Kalan is in ancient Jat village of Mechu clan called Kuloth Kalan , From here Mechu clan grew into the largest Jatland Baron clan of Many State.

Ram Savrup Mechu from Atela Kalan Charkhi Dadri . He served in the Indian Army for a total duration of 10 years and retired from the army on 14 December 1945. On behalf of the nation, Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi presented a copper plate (Tamrapatra) to Shri Ram Svarup Mechu for his outstanding contribution in the freedom struggle. On 21 October 1997, in the context of the birth centenary celebrations of Netaji, he was honored by giving a Tamrapatra by the Haryana government in honour of his active participation in the freedom struggle. On the centenary of the Indian National Congress (1885-1985), he received another Tamrapatra on 15 August 1985. Ram Swarup breathed his last on 31 August 1998.
