Lakshagrah (लाक्षागृह) (House of Lac) is a pivotal episode in the Mahabharata where the Kauravas, led by Duryodhana and his minister Purochana, plotted to kill the Pandavas by building a flammable palace made of lac and other combustible materials in Varnavata. Warned by Vidura, the Pandavas escaped through a secret underground tunnel, leaving the palace to burn down.
It has been identified with village Baranawa near spread across an area of 1659 Hectares, Lakshagrah is located at the intersection of Hindon River and Krishna River in Baraut tahsil of district Bagpat in Uttar Pradesh. The place is around 42 KM from Meerut.

Location
Lakshagrah is located south of Baranawa (बरणावा) Village in Baraut tahsil of district Bagpat in Uttar Pradesh. Barnava is a Jat Village in Desh-khap. It is identified with Varanavata (वारणावत) of Mahabharata (V.31.19). Barnava is situated near Binauli village. Pincode- 250645. Sirsal Garh is one of the village of district Bagpat in Uttar Pradesh. The village is Located 25 km. in East of bank of river Yamuna. It is 40 km from Meerut City and 20 km. from Bagpat. In the East of this village a small town Barnawa famous from the ancient time of Mahabharata for the burning of Laksha-grah.

History
It is said that the place was developed in 9th century by the then king Ahirvaran Tomar. Barnava finds a mention in the Varnavarata episode in Mahabharata.
In the south of the village, there is a small hill which is almost 100 feet high and is spread in an area of 30 acres. It is believed that these are the remains of the Lakh Mandap. It was in this Lakh Mandap where kauravas futile attempt of murder pandavas was made.
The shrines or darghahs of Budhin Shah and Makhdum Shah are also on this hill. These were built during the second half of the 17th century. Sanskrit inscription on one of the darghahs indicate that these were original.
Mahabharata Significance
Mahabharata Significance: Traditionally believed to be the ancient Varanāvata, Barnava is a major pilgrimage site associated with the Kauravas' plot against the Pandavas.
Recent Legal Ruling: In February 2024, after a 53-year legal battle, the site of the Lakshagriha was determined by a court to be the "Lakshagriha land" and not a Dargah, with the land awarded to the Hindu side.
Key Attractions: Key sites include the Lakshagriha mound and the Lakshagrah Lakha Mandap, where a local Ashram maintains a temple structure on the mound. Barnava, near Binauli is the site of the Lakshagriha, the lac palace that was built by Mayasura, the demon architect, to kill the Pandavas.

लाक्षागृह एक भवन था जिसे दुर्योधन ने पांडवों के विरुद्ध एक षड्यंत्र के तहत उनके ठहरने के लिए बनाया था। इसे लाख से निर्मित किया गया था ताकि पांडव जब इस घर में रहने आएं तो चुपके से इसमें आग लगा कर उन्हें मारा जा सके। यह वार्णावत (वर्तमान बरनावा) नामक स्थान में बनाया गया था। पर पांडवों को यह बात पता चल गई थी। वे सकुशल इस भवन से बच निकले थे।
लाक्षागृह के भस्म होने का समाचार जब हस्तिनापुर पहुँचा तो पाण्डवों को मरा समझ कर वहाँ की प्रजा अत्यन्त दुःखी हुई। दुर्योधन और धृतराष्ट्र सहित सभी कौरवों ने भी शोक मनाने का दिखावा किया और अन्त में उन्होंने पाण्डवों की अन्त्येष्टि करवा दी।
