Kochhor

Kochhor (कोछोर) is a large village in Danta Ramgarh tehsil of Sikar district in Rajasthan. Its ancient name, mentioned in Harsha Inscription 961 AD (L-38), was Lavanakutaka (लवणकूटक).

Location

It is 97 km far from jaipur in north-west & 30 km far from sikar in south east side, west of Palsana town. Nearby villages Sawaipura (north) & Rooppura (south).

In a paper read before the Asiatic Society on August 5, 1835, Sergeant E. Dean delivered the inglorious epitaph to an extraordinary tenth-century Indian temple - Harsha Mandir which he, along with Dr. G.E. Rankin had discovered previous year. This site of Harsha Inscription is known as Harshagiri, near the village of Harasnath about 7 miles south of Sikar in Rajasthan. This Inscription is very important for Chauhan history as it gives the genealogy of Chauhan rulers. In verse 48 it mentions names of villages donated by various Chauhan rulers for the temple of Harshanatha. Harsha Inscription 961-973 AD mentions Lavanakutaka (लवणकूटक) (L.38,V.48):

L-38: Likewise, the young prince, the blessed Jaya-Shri-raja (जयश्रीराज), religiously bestowed on Harsha-deva, the village of Kolikupaka (कोलिकूपक) (Kolida), whose revenues were received by himself.

Likewise, the whole of [the villages called] Shakambhari (शाकंभरी) (Sambhar), Lavanakutaka (लवणकूटक) (Kochhor), Prativinsha (प्रतिविंशा) (Parasrampura), and Apaharshaka (अपहर्षक) (Palasara), were bestowed in the same manner.^[1]

Population

As per Census-2001 data, its population was 4933, out of them 752 were SC and 392 ST.

As per Census-2011 statistics, Kochhor village has the total population of 5002 (of which 2651 are males while 2351 are females).^[2]

History

The Harsha inscription of 961-975 AD tells us names of villages which were donated by nearby Chauhan rulers or chieftains from their controlled area to the temple of Harshadeva. The village Lavanakutaka (लवणकूटक) (L.38,V.48) mentioned in this inscription has been identified as Kochhor.
