Chhur (छूर) is a village in Sardhana tahsil of Meerut district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the largest villages in Meerut district, located about 30 km north of Meerut town. The village is home to people of several castes who have traditionally sustained its agriculture-based economy, though the majority — roughly 85–90% — are Jats.[4]
History
The people of Chhur are said to have migrated from Jassaur Kheri (जैसोर खेड़ी) several centuries ago, drawn by the fertile land of the doab between the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, long considered among the most fertile tracts in India.
Settling here reportedly took two attempts, as the area was originally held by Rajputs. The migrants are said to have broken up a chaubeesi — a cluster of 24 Rajput villages — to establish themselves, making Chhur the first Jat village in the region at that time. Other Jat families of different gotras subsequently migrated to and settled across the wider Meerut region.
Geography
Chhur lies about 30 km from Meerut town and roughly 10 km northwest of Sardhana, the tahsil headquarters, known for the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces, held in great reverence by Christians. Sardhana was ruled by Begum Samru (1778–1836), the noblewoman who commissioned the basilica.

As per the 2011 Census of India, Chhur has 1,219 households and a total population of 7,566.[2]

The sex ratio is 795 females per 1,000 males, lower than the Uttar Pradesh average of 912. The village's overall literacy rate is 78.83% (male 88.59%, female 66.68%), higher than the state average.[3]
Jat gotras
Taliyan/Talan/Tehlan is the only Jat gotra found in Chhur, with the exception of one family that came from outside and settled in the village. The village is divided into twelve traditional pattis (lineage-based land divisions).
Amenities
Chhur has an inter college, a primary healthcare centre, and a separate girls' school (kanya pathshala).
