Chaudhary Kheta Ram (c. 1100–1140 CE) was a military commander in the service of Ajayraj Chauhan (Ajayaraja II), ruler of the Chauhan (Chahamana) dynasty. He is recognized as the founder of Pilani and the Pilania House (Pilania lineage) in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan.
Biography
Kheta Ram served as a commander under Ajayraj Chauhan during the early 12th century (c. 1100–1140 CE). Ajayraj, who reigned approximately 1110–1135 CE, founded the city of Ajmer (Ajayameru) in 1113 CE and expanded Chauhan influence across parts of Rajasthan. Kheta Ram held responsibilities in military leadership and regional administration within this framework.[1][2]

He established Pilani in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan and founded the Pilania House there. The settlement developed around defensive structures and became associated with the Pilania lineage, which played a role in local governance and military affairs under Chauhan suzerainty. Military Service
As a commander under Ajayraj Chauhan, Kheta Ram participated in the defense and consolidation of Chauhan territories during a period of regional conflicts, including engagements against neighboring powers and efforts to secure strategic positions in northern Rajasthan. His service supported the dynasty's expansion centered on Ajmer and surrounding regions.[3]
Legacy
Chaudhary Kheta Ram is commemorated as the founder of Pilani and the progenitor of the Pilania House. The town later grew into an important center in Shekhawati, known today for institutions such as BITS Pilani. His role as a commander under Ajayraj Chauhan links him to the broader history of the Chauhan dynasty in the 12th century.
The Pilania lineage continued to hold significance in the region in subsequent centuries.
