Bhai Jarnail Singh Bhateja
Bhai Jarnail Singh Bhateja was a Jatt Sikh belonging to the Bhateja clan, known for his participation in the Anglo-Sikh Wars (1845–1849), a series of conflicts between the Sikh Empire and the British East India Company. He hailed from a farming background, typical of many Jatt families, but like many during that era, took up arms in defense of the Sikh Empire as tensions grew with the expanding British colonial presence.
During the wars, particularly in key battles such as Mudki, Ferozeshah, and Sabraon, Bhai Jarnail Singh was among the Sikh soldiers who stood firm in their resistance. Though detailed personal records of his service are scarce, his name is preserved in oral histories and clan narratives as a symbol of courage and duty. His legacy lives on in the memory of the Bhateja community, reflecting their commitment to faith, honor, and the protection of their homeland during one of the most pivotal times in Punjab’s history.[1]
